In this episode of Own Your Power Radio, Simone sits down with filmmaker and multitalented artist Zariyah Perry. Originally from Dallas, Texas, Zariyah has explored several creative paths—including painting, dance, and acting—before discovering her passion for directing. Her breakthrough short film I Am Not the Norm aired on KERA’s Frame of Mind series and earned recognition from the YoungArts competition. Her work across projects such as The Letter, Zuri, and Ramadan for Aminah has received accolades from the NAACP ACT-SO, the Denton Black Film Festival, and the Oniros Film Awards. Most recently, she was announced as a recipient from the Austin Film Society. In this conversation, Zariyah shares her journey as a storyteller, what it takes to bring a film from vision to screen, and how she creates powerful slice-of-life stories that highlight communities that are often overlooked.
